Screening Report 3: Spain: Talk to her

Talk to Her

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

In class we discussed the different types of styles that director Pedro Almodovar displayed throughout the film. We expanded on the very different relationship Benigno has with Alicia, and whether we thought it was odd. Also we discussed how Almodovar used bullfighting subliminally for the empowerment of women. Everyone had mixed feelings about Benigno's and Marco's morals.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet

http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9B02E5D8153AF931A25753C1A9649C8B63?
This article made you look at Benigno and Marcos position and whether they were obsessed with the patients or loyal. Here's a quote from the writer: "Mr. AlmodÃvar's purview started out as a lewd, slapstick version of the heightened melodrama of the 50's director Douglas Sirk: if ''Magnificent Obsession'' had starred a sexual Lucille Ball. But the director has moved past candy-colored Fassbinder with a sense of humor.''

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
I thought this article was a great article if you had a pessimistic perception on Marco and Benigno in the film. The writer points out Almodovar's versatility in the film combining tragedy, comedy,  and suspense all in one. Also it makes you feel sympathy for Marco and Benigno who are considered rapist. Almodovar balances different tones phenomenally throughout the film which made it a must see!

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

Talk to her is a great film that challenges the viewer to guess what may or may not happen. Director Almodovar's depicts social issues like rape and obsession in a unique way. Although at times you may question whether you the way Benigno treats Alicia is ok, you start to build a understanding for their relationship. Overall Ill give this film an 8 out of 10.
