Screening Report 2: France, Three colors blue

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In class we discussed the unique technique's Director Krzysztof Kieslowski used his film Trois Couleurs Bleu. Kiewlowski used colors and sounds to add dramatic effects to this film which made you feel the emotions of the protagonist. Throughput the film, their were hidden messages that the director was trying to portray. For instance their was opera music playing in suspenseful scenes that was her late husbands work, before him and her child passed in a car accident. This showed her sorrow and grief she felt for the death of her loved ones. We also discussed when she would go to the pool, it could be interpreted as a sign to get away from her problems.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.  (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet.  Cite the article and copy the link to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.  Make sure your link is a true hyperlink that will connect to the article you are referencing.

The article I chose focuses on understanding the rich textures that are typically used in French films. This article goes in depth about how Kieslowski uses the color blue to symbolize Julie's freedom from society and also thinking about past life. The author takes a look at the scenes with the blue pool and the blue chandelier. These objects reflect Julie's away time from the real world.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
This article made me look more so at the stages of Julie throughout the film. I noticed the theme through out the film was about Julie overcoming obstacles, but this article made it clearer. The article also gave me a different view on the objects that symbolized liberty from Julie's pass life.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this)  than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

Overall this film was very abstract and filled with emotion from the very beginning. I feel like what made this film critically acclaimed is the character development of Julie. As the storyline develops, you start to really feel empathy for Julie. The director made this film easy to relate to because everyone has to deal with death. After her family died in the accident, I feel like Julie decided to simply "free" herself from her pass life that was filled with sorrow. I would watch this film again.
